Cursor's X Subscription, Explained: Switch, Stay or Leave?

Since October 12, 2026, new Cursor customers buy it through The X Subscription — one plan for Cursor, Grok and X, from $0 to $200 a month. Grok usage is included; Claude, GPT and Gemini in Cursor now cost extra at API list price. Existing plans continue, and switching cannot be undone.

Key takeaways

  • From October 12, 2026, new Cursor customers buy it through The X Subscription: Free, Plus $8, Premium $30, Super $100 and Ultra $200 a month.
  • Grok and Cursor share one usage pool that refreshes weekly. Claude, GPT and Gemini in Cursor are billed at API list price from prepaid credit, on Premium and above only.
  • Existing Cursor plans, including Pro at $20, continue with their included third-party usage until you switch.
  • Switching is optional and permanent: it cancels your old Cursor, SuperGrok and X Premium plans with a prorated refund.
  • If you mainly use Claude or GPT, compare Claude Code (from $20), GitHub Copilot (from $10) and OpenCode (bring your own keys) before you switch.

What changed in Cursor's pricing?

In June, SpaceX — which had merged with xAI earlier in the year — announced it would acquire Anysphere, Cursor's maker, for $60 billion in stock. Four months later the products merged at the till: Cursor, Grok and X Premium are now one subscription, sold by SpaceXSI.

For anyone choosing an AI editor, the change that matters is which models the monthly fee pays for. It used to cover a mix of providers; on the new plans it covers Grok.

One weekly pool

Grok models in Cursor, the Grok apps, the Grok tab on X and Grok Bot all draw from one allowance that refreshes every week, not every month.

Third-party models are metered

Claude, GPT and Gemini are available from Premium up, billed at API list price from prepaid credit from the first use. Free and Plus are Grok-only.

Old plans carry on

Hobby, Pro, Pro+, Ultra and Teams subscribers keep their price, features and included third-party usage until they change or cancel.

Switching is one-way

Moving to the X Subscription cancels your Cursor, SuperGrok and X Premium plans with a prorated refund. Cursor says support cannot undo it.

Still unanswered at launch: users asked on Cursor's forum whether the new plans include any third-party allowance before metering starts, how annual billing works, and how old plans map to new ones. None had an official answer in the launch thread. The new Ultra is also a different product from the old Cursor Ultra, despite the name.

Do you need to do anything? If you are on an existing Cursor plan, no — nothing changes until you choose to switch. If you are buying Cursor for the first time, the decision is really about which model you want the flat fee to cover.

Should you switch, stay or leave?

No single answer — it turns on which model you code with most.

Switch

You mostly code with Grok, or already pay for SuperGrok or X Premium. One plan replaces several, and Cursor says each tier includes at least twice the Grok coding usage of the plan it replaces.

X Subscription

Stay

You are on Pro or Pro+ and use Claude or GPT inside Cursor. Your plan still includes that usage; the new plans would meter it at API prices. Do not switch until you have priced your real usage.

Current Cursor plan

Leave

You are new, and want a flat fee that covers Claude or GPT. Look at Claude Code, GitHub Copilot or OpenCode below — each includes or routes to those models differently.

An alternative

What are the best Cursor alternatives?

Three established options, each built around a different answer to "which model does my fee pay for?" Prices from each vendor's pricing page, October 2026.

Claude Code

$20/mo with Claude Pro ($17 annual)

Anthropic's coding agent, in the terminal and IDE extensions. Included with Pro; Max starts at $100 for 5× Pro usage, with a 20× tier above it. Usage limits reset per five-hour session.

Best for: developers who want Claude models in a flat fee.

GitHub Copilot

$10/mo Pro · $39 Pro+ · $100 Max

Plans include AI credits (1 credit = $0.01) usable across Claude, GPT, Gemini and Grok models, with unlimited code completions on paid plans. Works in VS Code, JetBrains and more, plus a coding agent that opens pull requests.

Best for: teams that want many models in their existing editor.

OpenCode

Free, open source + your API costs

An open-source coding agent for the terminal that works with any model provider using your own keys — the same API-price billing Cursor now uses for third-party models, without a subscription on top.

Best for: developers who want to pick any model and pay only usage.

Which should you pick?

You love the Cursor editor and use Grok happily

The X Subscription. Premium at $30 adds cloud agents, Bugbot and Grok Bot; keep a spending cap on third-party models for the occasional Claude or GPT task.

Cursor (X Subscription)

Claude is your main model

Claude Code, or keep your existing Cursor Pro plan for as long as you do not switch. Claude Pro includes Claude Code from $17 a month on annual billing.

Claude Code

You want many models without changing editor

GitHub Copilot. Credits work across providers, and it lives inside the editor you already use. Pro+ adds delegation to third-party agents.

GitHub Copilot

You want no vendor in the middle

OpenCode with your own API keys. You pay providers directly, can switch models any day, and are not exposed to the next bundle change.

OpenCode

Your editor is one line of the stack

Our AI-powered generator plans the rest — hosting, database, auth, AI models — sized to your budget.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the X Subscription for Cursor?

It is a single plan, sold by SpaceXSI, that bundles Cursor, Grok and X Premium benefits. It launched on October 12, 2026 with five tiers: Free, Plus at $8 a month, Premium at $30, Super at $100 and Ultra at $200. Grok and Cursor share one usage pool that refreshes weekly. New Cursor customers now buy Cursor through it.

Can I still use Claude or GPT in Cursor?

Yes, on Premium ($30) and above, but not inside the subscription price. Third-party models such as Claude, GPT and Gemini are billed at the provider’s API list price from your prepaid credit, from the first use. The Free and Plus tiers are Grok-only. Existing Cursor plans keep their included third-party usage until you switch.

What happens to my Cursor Pro $20 plan?

It continues. Cursor says current plans, prices and features carry on unless you change or cancel them, and you can still move between existing Cursor plans without switching. Switching to the X Subscription is optional, but it is permanent: it cancels your Cursor, SuperGrok and X Premium subscriptions with a prorated refund, and support cannot undo it.

Should I switch to the X Subscription?

Switch if you mostly code with Grok models or already pay for SuperGrok or X Premium, because one plan replaces several and Cursor says each tier includes at least twice the Grok coding usage of the plan it replaces. Stay on your current plan if you rely on Claude or GPT in Cursor, because the new plans bill those at API prices. The switch cannot be reversed, so decide before you click.

Who owns Cursor now?

SpaceX announced on June 16, 2026 that it would acquire Anysphere, the company behind Cursor, for $60 billion in stock, after merging with xAI earlier in the year. The X Subscription is sold by SpaceXSI, and Cursor’s pricing page links to SpaceXSI subscription terms.

What is the best Cursor alternative in 2026?

It depends on which model you want included in a flat price. Claude Code comes with Claude Pro at $20 a month ($17 billed annually) and Max from $100. GitHub Copilot Pro is $10 a month with AI credits that cover Claude, GPT and Gemini models, and works in VS Code and JetBrains. OpenCode is open source and runs any model with your own API keys. There is no single best choice; pick by the model you use most.

How does Cursor usage work on the X Subscription?

Each tier gets a share of one Grok usage pool that refreshes every week and is shared across the Grok apps, the Grok tab on X, Grok Bot and Cursor. Premium has four times Plus’s usage, Super 15 times and Ultra 50 times. Third-party models and Grok API usage are billed separately and do not draw from the pool.
