It adds encryption as a service, fine-grained policies and many auth methods, which is why large platform teams standardise on it. The cost is operational: someone has to run, unseal, upgrade and back up the cluster.

Community Edition is free to self-host under the Business Source License 1.1 (not open source since August 2023; OpenBao is the MPL-licensed community fork).
