# OpenTofu: Pricing, Features & Alternatives

OpenTofu was forked from the last MPL-licensed Terraform after HashiCorp's 2023 licence change. Gruntwork, Spacelift, Harness, env0 and Scalr started it, and it is now stewarded by the Linux Foundation. Your existing HCL, providers and state files work unchanged. On top of that it has shipped things Terraform users asked for: client-side state encryption with AWS KMS, GCP KMS or a passphrase (1.7), an \`-exclude\` flag and \`for\_each\` on provider blocks (1.9). The current release is 1.13\. It is free with no commercial tier, so the only cost is the CI and state bucket you run it from.
