# HashiCorp Vault: Pricing, Features & Alternatives

Vault, now part of IBM after its 2025 acquisition of HashiCorp, stores secrets and also issues short-lived ones: database credentials, cloud keys and certificates that are created on request and expire on their own. It adds encryption as a service, fine-grained policies and many auth methods, which is why large platform teams standardise on it. The cost is operational: someone has to run, unseal, upgrade and back up the cluster.

Community Edition is free to self-host under the Business Source License 1.1 (not open source since August 2023; OpenBao is the MPL-licensed community fork). HCP Vault Dedicated is billed hourly by tier and size, for example $0.62 an hour for a Development extra-small cluster and $1.58 to $1.84 for small Essentials or Standard clusters, plus about $73 per client per month on those tiers. HCP Vault Secrets, the lighter managed product, has been retired. Vault Enterprise is quoted. As of October 2026.
