# AWS CloudFormation: Pricing, Features & Alternatives

CloudFormation is what AWS itself builds on: CDK, SAM and Amplify all compile down to CloudFormation stacks. It charges nothing for AWS::\* resources; you pay only for what it creates. Third-party and private resource types, and hooks, cost $0.0009 per handler operation after 1,000 free a month. The state lives inside AWS, so there is no bucket or lock table to run, and rollbacks are automatic. The trade-off is scope. It cannot touch Cloudflare, Datadog, GitHub or another cloud, which is usually why multi-vendor teams end up on Terraform or Pulumi anyway.
