# Sentry vs Datadog vs New Relic: Monitoring in 2026

Sentry bills per event. Datadog bills per host and per product. New Relic bills per gigabyte and per user. The same five-person startup can pay **$26 a month on one and over $200 on another** — and each is the right choice for somebody. We compare what each is built to see, what it costs, and the AI debugging agents all three now sell on top.

## First: why you need monitoring before you think you do

Most bugs in production are never reported. A user hits an error on checkout, shrugs and leaves. Without monitoring, the first sign is a flat revenue chart and nobody knows why. With it, you get the error, the line of code, the browser, the user and the steps that led there — usually before anyone complains.

Monitoring tools collect errors, traces (how long each part of a request took), logs and metrics, and alert you when something changes. The three on this page overlap more every year, but each started somewhere different, and that origin still shapes what they are good at.

### Hear about bugs before customers do

An alert on a new error type means you fix it in the afternoon, not after the support ticket, the refund and the bad review.

### Know which release broke it

Errors tagged with the release and commit that introduced them turn "something is wrong" into "this deploy, this file, roll it back".

### Find what is slow

A trace shows that the page takes three seconds because of one database query. Performance work starts with knowing where the time goes.

### Sleep through the night

Good alerting pages you for what matters and stays quiet about the rest. Bad alerting trains everyone to ignore it — which is worse than none.

**What it does not do:** it does not fix anything, and more data is not more insight. Every tool here bills by volume, so a noisy app with no sampling can run up a large bill while the one important error drowns in thousands of unimportant ones.

**Do you need this yet?** Error tracking, yes — from the first real user. It takes minutes to install and the free tiers cover early products. Full observability with infrastructure metrics and centralised logs can wait until you run enough services that failures happen between them rather than inside your code.

## Quick Verdict

![](https://appstackbuilder.com/sentry.svg)Sentry

Built for developers debugging their own code: errors with stack traces, releases, session replay and tracing. Published per-event pricing that a startup can predict without talking to sales.

Full-stack observability billed on data and users instead of hosts. The most generous free tier here — 100 GB of ingest a month — which covers a lot of small apps entirely.

TL;DR

No single winner — pick on what you need to see. What broke in my code → **Sentry**. What is unhealthy across my whole infrastructure → **Datadog**. Full-stack visibility with a bill driven by data and seats rather than servers → **New Relic**. Already on PostHog or just want uptime alerts → look at the challengers below first.

## Three meters, three different bills

The fastest way to understand these tools is to look at what they charge for. The meter tells you what each company thinks the product is — and which way your bill moves as you grow.

### Per event — Sentry

You pay for errors, spans and replays captured, with seats unlimited on paid plans. The bill grows with traffic and with how buggy the app is, and it is easy to control with sampling and rate limits. Adding a server costs nothing; a bad release that throws a million errors does.

### Per host, per product — Datadog

You pay for each host monitored, for each product switched on per host (infrastructure, APM, and so on), and for logs by volume. The bill grows with your infrastructure footprint and with every product you enable. Scaling out to more, smaller servers raises it even at the same traffic.

### Per gigabyte, per user — New Relic

You pay for data ingested past 100 GB a month and for users who need full access. Hosts are unlimited. The bill grows with telemetry volume and team size — so a small team with a lot of servers can do well, and a large team with little data pays mostly for seats.

Model your bill in the unit the vendor charges, not the one on the marketing page. A tool that looks cheap per host can be expensive per engineer, and the reverse.

## The three, in detail

Plans and list prices as published on each vendor's pricing page in September 2026\. Annual billing is cheaper than on-demand on all three.

Unlimited users on Team

### Sentry

Errors, traces and replays for developers

$0 for one user

Team $26/mo, Business $80/mo (annual)

* Free: 1 user, 5K errors, 5M spans, 50 replays, 5 GB logs
* Team $26/mo: unlimited users, 50K errors, integrations
* Business $80/mo: advanced quota management, SAML and SCIM
* Extra logs $0.50/GB; pay-as-you-go above reserved volume
* Seer AI debugging: $40 per active contributor per month
* Self-hosted edition under the Functional Source License
* CaveatIt watches your code, not your servers. Infrastructure metrics, host health and log search at scale are not what Sentry is built for, so a growing platform eventually needs something alongside it.

Best for: Product teams who want to find and fix code-level bugs fast, at a price they can predict.

Widest product range

### Datadog

Everything, correlated

Free up to 5 hosts

Infra Pro $15/host/mo, APM $31/host/mo (annual)

* Free infrastructure tier: up to 5 hosts, 1-day retention
* Infra Pro $15/host/mo annual ($18 on-demand); Enterprise $23
* APM $31/host/mo annual with infrastructure ($36 standalone)
* Logs: $0.10/GB ingest, $1.70 per million events indexed (annual)
* Error tracking included with APM and Log Management
* Bits AI agents billed in AI credits, from $500 per 500 credits
* CaveatEvery product is a separate line item per host, and on-demand rates run higher than annual. Teams regularly find the bill grew faster than their traffic. Set usage alerts and review them monthly.

Best for: Teams with real infrastructure — many services, containers, databases — who want one place to see all of it.

100 GB free every month

### New Relic

Full stack, billed on data and seats

$0 up to 100 GB/mo

then $0.40/GB; users from $10/mo

* Free: 100 GB ingest, 1 full-platform user, unlimited basic users
* Data past 100 GB: $0.40/GB standard, $0.60/GB Data Plus
* Core users $49/mo; full-platform Standard $10 first, then $99
* Pro full-platform users $349/mo on annual billing
* No per-host charges — hosts are unlimited
* 50+ capabilities on the free tier, including APM and logs
* CaveatFull-platform seats are the expensive part. On Standard you are capped at five full users; past that, Pro at $349 per user changes the maths entirely. Decide early who needs full access and who is fine as a basic user.

Best for: Small teams with many hosts but little telemetry, or anyone who wants full-stack visibility on a free tier first.

## One startup, three bills

A five-person SaaS team: 4 hosts, tracing on, about 40,000 errors and 50 GB of logs a month, three engineers who need full access. List prices from September 2026, annual billing. Your numbers will differ; the shape usually does not.

![](https://appstackbuilder.com/sentry.svg)

### Sentry Team

\~$26–50/mo

40K errors fit in Team's 50K. Logs past the included 5 GB add $0.50/GB — cheaper to send most logs elsewhere. No infrastructure metrics.

![](https://www.google.com/s2/favicons?domain=datadoghq.com&sz=128)

### Datadog

\~$190–210/mo

4 hosts × ($15 infra + $31 APM) = $184, plus $5 to ingest 50 GB of logs and $1.70 per million log events you keep searchable. Covers infrastructure, traces, logs and errors together.

![](https://www.google.com/s2/favicons?domain=newrelic.com&sz=128)

### New Relic Standard

\~$208/mo

Data stays inside the free 100 GB, so the bill is seats: $10 for the first full user and $99 for each of two more. With one full user and the rest basic, it is $10.

**The numbers are not measuring the same thing:** Sentry is cheapest because it watches less — your code, not your servers. Datadog and New Relic cost more and see the whole system. The honest comparison is Sentry versus doing without infrastructure monitoring, and Datadog versus New Relic for the full-stack job. Dropping log lines you never search is the biggest saving on all three.

## Challengers worth knowing

Two lighter options cover a big part of what small teams need, often for less.

![](https://www.google.com/s2/favicons?domain=betterstack.com&sz=128)Better Stack

Uptime monitoring, status pages, on-call and log management in one product. A strong pair for Sentry: Sentry for code errors, Better Stack for "is it up" and logs.

![](https://www.google.com/s2/favicons?domain=posthog.com&sz=128)PostHog error tracking

If you already use PostHog for analytics, its error tracking includes 100,000 exceptions a month free and links each error to the session replay and the user. One fewer vendor.

Grafana Cloud is the other name to know: the managed version of the open-source Grafana, Prometheus and Loki stack, popular with teams who want to avoid lock-in to one vendor's agent.

## Which one should you pick?

### You are a small product team and bugs are the main risk

**Sentry.** It gives you the error, the stack trace, the release and a replay of what the user did, at a price you can predict. Add uptime checks from a lighter tool and you are covered for a long time.

![](https://appstackbuilder.com/sentry.svg)Sentry

### You run many services and the failures happen between them

**Datadog.** Correlating a latency spike with a host, a container, a queue and a log line in one screen is what it does best. Commit annually, set usage alerts per product, and review the bill every month.

![](https://www.google.com/s2/favicons?domain=datadoghq.com&sz=128)Datadog

### You want full-stack visibility but have many hosts and a small team

**New Relic.** No per-host fee and 100 GB free means infrastructure-heavy, data-light setups can run cheaply. Keep most teammates as basic users and give full access only to those on call.

![](https://www.google.com/s2/favicons?domain=newrelic.com&sz=128)New Relic

### You are torn between Datadog and New Relic

Model both in their own units for your real numbers — hosts and products for Datadog, gigabytes and full users for New Relic — then run the same service on both free tiers for two weeks. The one your on-call engineer reaches for during an incident is the answer.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Which is best in 2026: Sentry, Datadog or New Relic?

There is no single best one — they look at different layers and bill in different units. Sentry is built to show developers which line of code broke and for whom, and bills per error, span and replay. Datadog is built to watch the whole infrastructure — hosts, containers, logs, traces — and bills per host and per product. New Relic covers a similar full-stack scope to Datadog but bills per gigabyte of data and per user, with no per-host charge. Choose on what you need to see, then model the bill in that tool’s unit.

### Is Sentry cheaper than Datadog?

For most small teams, yes. Sentry Team is $26 a month on annual billing with unlimited users and includes 50,000 errors and 5 million spans. Datadog has a free tier for up to 5 hosts with one-day retention, but paid infrastructure monitoring is $15 per host per month and APM adds $31 per host on annual billing, so four hosts with APM start around $184 a month before logs. The comparison flips only when you need what Datadog sees and Sentry does not: infrastructure metrics, logs at scale and cross-service dashboards.

### How does New Relic pricing work?

New Relic charges for data and people, not hosts. Every account gets 100 GB of data ingest a month free, one free full-platform user and unlimited free basic users. Past 100 GB, data costs $0.40 per GB, or $0.60 per GB on Data Plus. Core users are $49 a month; full-platform users on Standard are $10 for the first and $99 for each additional user up to five, and $349 per user on Pro with annual billing. A small team that keeps ingest under 100 GB mostly pays for seats.

### What are Sentry Seer and Datadog Bits AI?

They are AI debugging agents that investigate an error or incident and propose a cause or a fix. Sentry prices Seer at $40 per active contributor per month, where an active contributor is anyone who opens two or more pull requests to a Seer-enabled repository in the month. Datadog prices its Bits AI agents in AI credits, starting at $500 for 500 credits a month on annual billing; Datadog has reported an average of about 6.5 credits per Bits AI SRE investigation. Both are add-ons, not included in the base plans.

### Do I need Datadog if I already use Sentry?

Not until infrastructure is your problem. Sentry answers "what broke in my code and who did it affect". Datadog answers "which host, container, queue or database is unhealthy and why is latency up across services". Many teams run Sentry alone for years. You add a full observability platform when you have enough services and infrastructure that the failure is increasingly outside your code.

### Can I self-host Sentry?

Yes. Sentry publishes a self-hosted edition under the Functional Source License, which you can run on your own servers. It is a substantial set of services to operate, so most small teams are better off on the hosted plans. Datadog and New Relic are hosted only.

### What is the cheapest way to start with error monitoring?

Use a free tier and set spending limits. Sentry’s Developer plan is free for one user with 5,000 errors a month. New Relic’s free tier includes 100 GB of ingest and one full-platform user. PostHog includes 100,000 exceptions a month free if you already use it for analytics. Whichever you choose, sample noisy errors and drop events you never act on — every one of these tools bills by volume.
